artist statement

As a painter, acrylic has always been my medium. I approach painting in a figurative and realist way, which over time seemed to have almost transformed into a form of abstraction. I paint black women with faces and bodies resembling dolls drawing towards realism. I am influenced by what I see and what I hear. Beauty in darkness, darkness in beauty and simplicity in the world we live in are themes that I like to explore. Some of my works can be spontaneous and have no dark meaning behind them and can be as simple as they seem. My work also deals with subjects such as feminism, death; the difficulty of accepting its normality, beauty; in a world that may seem dark and nature itself. I prefer to explore ideas as a broad context and not be too specific and obvious in the meaning of my works. More recently, female body hair and beauty standards have been an important topic in my work and continues to be so.
