Esther Calixte-Bea was born in Canada in the province of Quebec in 1996 of Haitian and Ivorian descent. She has been pursuing her dream of becoming a professional artist since high school, at the age of 12, where she began painting. She studied at Dawson College in Visual Arts and has completed her Bachelor Degree at Concordia University in Painting and Drawing. Recognized for her Lavender project, which was featured on Radio Canada’s Let’s Go, Denis Lévesque and GLAMOUR UK, she continues to promote female body hair through her art.

artist statement

As a painter, acrylic has always been my medium. I approach painting in a figurative and realist way, which over time seemed to have almost transformed into a form of abstraction. I paint black women with faces and bodies resembling dolls drawing towards realism. I am influenced by what I see and what I hear. Beauty in darkness, darkness in beauty and simplicity in the world we live in are themes that I like to explore. Some of my works can be spontaneous and have no dark meaning behind them and can be as simple as they seem. My works also deals with subjects such as feminism; the woman of today and the past, death; the difficulty of accepting its normality, beauty; in a world that may seem dark and nature itself. I prefer to explore ideas as a broad context and not be too specific and obvious in the meaning of my works. More recently, female body hair and beauty standards have been an important topic in my work and continues to be so. The most important part of my process is the great realisation I had made over time that what is truly important in art making is keeping in mind that there is no such thing as a mistake.
